PETER HUGHES

FARM BUSINESS CONSULTING

After a long management career in agriculture, involving an extensive range of crops and processed products, across a number of export dependent agro-industries and with experience in both family business and corporate environments, Peter moved into consulting in commercial agriculture and family business fields in 2002.

In recent years he has been predominantly involved in working with family businesses, including some of the largest family-owned farming businesses in Southern Africa.

He brings to Family Legacies a wealth of knowledge in agricultural business management, together with many years of practical experience of working with farming families to grow and secure their businesses into the future.

Peter’s extensive experience in agricultural business includes; citrus, avocados, pecan nuts, vegetables, dairy, stud cattle, beef, timber production and processing, sugar cane, a range of field crops and broiler chickens.  

Peter holds a BSc (Chemistry & Entomology) from Rhodes University, an MBA from University of Cape Town and Executive Programme from Stanford University, USA.

He has held numerous senior executive and leadership positions including:

  • Chairman of the S.A. Litchi and Avocado Growers Associations.

  • Director of Capespan Group Holdings Ltd. (Vice Chairman; Chairman Audit Committee).

  • Chairman - Swaziland Cane Growers Association.

  • President - Swaziland Sugar Association.

  • President - Federation of Swaziland Employers.

  • Director - HL Hall & Sons (Farms) (Pty) Ltd.

  • Founder Chairman/Director - Mbuluzi Game Reserve (Pty) Ltd.

  • Director - Tongaat Hulett Sugar (1998-2000) 

  • Director - Timbali Technology Incubator (Section 21 Company undertaking development of small-scale farmers in South Africa producing flowers and a wide range of baby-vegetables).

  • Director - Golden Macadamia (one of largest macadamia processors in the world, located in Mpumalanga).
